A dented credit file needs a specialist, not a lecture
Missed payments, defaults, a CCJ, a debt plan, even past bankruptcy: there are brokers who handle exactly this every week, and lenders built for it. Describe your situation anonymously, no credit check, no judgement - and see who puts themselves forward.
Why credit blips don’t end the conversation
High-street lenders run tight criteria, and a scruffy credit file can mean a quick no. What their adverts don’t mention is the layer of specialist lenders whose entire business is credit history that needs explaining, and whose criteria live in brokers’ sourcing systems, not on public comparison sites.
What matters to those lenders is usually what happened, how big it was, and how long ago. A two-year-old mobile-phone default is a different conversation from a recent CCJ; a settled debt-management plan is different from an active one. Lenders draw these lines differently, which is why the same person can be declined by one and welcomed by another.
What an adverse-credit specialist does
- Reads your history the way lenders will, and tells you honestly whether now is the moment, or whether a few months of tidying would open better doors.
- Knows the specialist market, which lenders accept which issues, at what age and size, and what evidence they’ll want.
- Protects your file, a scattergun of failed applications leaves marks; a specialist targets the lender likely to say yes the first time.
- Plans the route back, many people start on a specialist product and remortgage to the high street once the file heals.
Why this is the page where anonymity matters most
Nobody wants to type their phone number into a website next to the words “bad credit”. On Broker Finder you don’t: the questionnaire asks about credit history in broad bands, on your say-so, with no credit check and no contact details. Brokers see “Buyer #4821” and your situation, never your name. If a match feels right, you choose them and only they hear from you. If nobody does, choose nobody, and there is genuinely nothing to undo.
Every broker on the panel is authorised and regulated by the FCA and vetted before joining. Broker Finder is an introducer, not an adviser - advice comes from the regulated broker you choose.

Credit-history questions, answered straight
Can I actually get a mortgage with defaults or a CCJ?
Often, yes - it depends on the size, the age, and whether it’s settled. Specialist lenders exist precisely for this, and their appetite varies enough that the same history gets different answers at different doors. That lender-matching is exactly what an adverse-credit broker does all day.
Will the questionnaire check my credit?
No. It asks about your history in broad bands, “a blip or two” or “some history to explain”, entirely on your say-so. Nothing is checked, searched or recorded against you. Credit checks only ever happen later, with your chosen broker and lender, with your explicit permission.
Will I pay a higher rate?
Possibly, specialist products can cost more than high-street deals, and honesty about that beats pretending otherwise. A good specialist shows you the whole picture: whether a mainstream lender would actually take your case, which specialist is cheapest for your history, and whether waiting would change the answer. Many people remortgage back to the high street once their file recovers.
Who sees what I share here?
Your case, needs, bands, credit band, region - goes to matched brokers anonymously. Your name and contact details are collected only if you choose a broker, and go to that one broker alone. We never sell data, and the rest of the panel never learns who you are. Details in our privacy policy.
